FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear friends and colleagues,

Happy Easter!  Thanks to all those who worked so diligently to prepare and celebrate the liturgies of the Paschal Triduum, to prepare those who were initiated, to welcome so many parishioners and guests alike, to lead them in song, and so many other liturgical and sacramental ministries in our Families of Parishes.  May these first days of Eastertide bring you some rest and relaxation and unbounded paschal joy!

In this month’s Praenotanda, you’ll find information on upcoming workshops on the role of the worship commission, With Zeal in Patience, in just a few weeks. There will also be workshops for new and veteran extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion this spring: register yourself or forward to parishioners.

As this final year of the national Eucharistic revival continues, take note of information about the new ritual book Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharistic Mystery outside Mass, to be implemented this fall, and some workshops offered by the FDLC in May.

As always, if there’s anything that Matt, Monica, or I can do to assist you in your worship and sacramental ministries, please let us know.

2024: Year of Prayer

Pope Francis has asked that 2024 be marked as a Year of Prayer. The Holy Father announced its launch on Sunday 21 January 2024, on the fifth annual celebration of the ‘Sunday of the Word of God’. The Pope wrote: “From now on I am happy to think that the year preceding the Jubilee event, 2024, will be dedicated to a great ‘symphony’ of prayer. First of all, to recover the desire to be in the presence of the Lord, to listen to him and adore him.” In preparation for the 2025 Jubilee, therefore, individual dioceses are invited to promote the centrality of individual and community prayer during this year. The Vatican has made some useful resources available to help people to better understand and rediscover the value of prayer, including at Mass, Exposition, and other liturgies.

Q.    How is the date of Easter determinedIs it the same for all Christians?

A.    Easter Sunday of the Resurrection is the Sunday after the first full moon (the “new moon” or the “paschal moon”) after the vernal equinox.  In a sense, before we can celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus and the redemption of all creation, the earth must be ready, the sun must be ready, even the moon must be ready…all of creation must be prepared to greet the Rising Dawn!  This is the method of computation for Western Christians. The Orthodox continue to follow an older calendar, thus sometimes the Sunday is different.
