FROM THE OFFICE DIRECTOR
As the school year resumes, the end of summer also brings a sense of excitement and possibility for our parishes, schools, and other faith communities. While we are still attentive to the need for health safety, I’m encouraged to see so many creative and new approaches to serving God’s people in our liturgical prayer and sacramental celebrations.
Below you’ll find plenty of praenotanda: notes to help you have a successful month of ministry. You’re invited to Back to Mission, the first in a new series of roundtable conversations bringing parish leaders together; the first of these is Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 1:30pm.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion – new and veteran – will benefit from our virtual training workshops this fall in English and Spanish.
There are two upcoming special days of prayer for the archdiocese: Sept. 9 for Peace in Our Communities, and Sept 11 for the Church and Victims of Abuse.
Thanks for continuing to share exciting new archdiocesan initiatives like iVoteCatholic and Pray a Minute with your faith community.
As always, if there’s anything that Matt, Monica, or myself can do to assist you in your worship and sacramental ministries, please let us know.

FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR
Let’s talk copyright law (I know – very exciting!).
If your parish is streaming services on any platform (YouTube, Facebook Live, etc.), podcasting, or publishing copyrighted material in any form (posting worship aids online or for distribution for in-person services), you absolutely must report all copyrighted material.
Not doing so is a violation of the law and can result in fines and penalties from the FCC and other regulatory bodies. A parish in my last diocese posted a poem online without giving proper credit and paying the copyright holder royalties, and they were fined $20,000. It is also important to report so that composers of music and texts are justly compensated for their work.
The easiest and most convenient way to report is to obtain a reprint license from OneLicense.net. Their copyright reporting covers the major publisher of Catholic (and many others) music. If all you are doing is streaming masses and other services, then you will need to obtain a podcast license. If you are also posting worship aids for use at home, you will need to obtain a reprint license as well.
Many parishes that have printed their own materials “in house” have a license already. This license does not cover streaming of services; you must add a podcast license to your existing account. It is a very minimal fee.
As always, if you have questions please don’t hesitate to reach out and ask any of us at the ODWS – we’re here to help you.
Soli Deo Gloria,
Matthew Geerlings Music Director

All parish leaders – pastors, vicars, deacons, parish staff, and other parish leaders - are invited to join us.

Invite your parishioners, students, and friends to Pray A Minute: One Million Hours of Prayer for Peace, Justice and Goodwill
The world feels heavy these days. News headlines are filled with injustices and unrest. It seems as though everywhere we turn we find division and disharmony in our country. The world desperately needs Christians united in prayer.
A million hours of prayer may sound impossible, but if you divide that prayer time among all of the Catholics in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, it is just one minute of prayer a day. Just one minute. From now until January 1, the World Day of Prayer for Peace, you are invited to pray one minute more than you already do, every day, specifically for the intention of peace, justice and goodwill in our country.
|
|
|
|
|
One more minute might not sound like much, but together with our brothers and sisters in faith, that minute can help change the world. Commit to praying a minute each day at www.prayaminute.com.

Help Build the Kingdom on Earth
|
|
|
Check out this new initiative for parishes and schools to help Catholics form their consciences for faithful citizenship. For the 7 weeks leading up to the election this fall, you are invited to help your parishioners and students examine closely the major themes of Catholic Social Teaching and to better understand what it means to be a faithful citizen, voting according to the Gospel.
|
|
|
|
Liturgical ministers will find ways to acknowledge these 7 themes (aligned with the scriptures of the Sunday) including sample intentions for the Universal Prayer, musical suggestions, homily helps, and more!

Photos Needed: Parishes at Prayer
We’d like to feature a photo of one of our parishes at prayer at the top of each new monthly news email. If you can share a photo of your faith community celebrating the liturgy, please email the ODWS with a photo attached. Some basic guidelines:
- Landscape, not portrait
- Hi-res (at least 2MB)
- Focus more on the people than the building

Q. From where should the Responsorial Psalm be sung? From where may it be sung? Why?
A. As a proclamation of scripture within the Liturgy of the Word, the General Instruction of the Roman Missal directs that the Responsorial Psalm should be sung from the ambo or another suitable place. (GIRM 61). However, other “suitable places” could include a separate lectern, somewhere in the choir area, or other location. Particularly if the choir will either intone the antiphon or sing the verses of the psalm, it may make sense for a psalmist to be located in closer proximity to the choir.
During a time of public health concern, it may also make sense for the ambo to be reserved for fewer ministers, and thus it makes sense for the psalmist to sing from elsewhere.
