St. Maximilian Kolbe Church
Planning Your Christmas Liturgies?

Archbishop Schnurr has determined that the earliest start time for a Vigil Mass for the Nativity of the Lord remains 3:00pm on December 24th, whether there is an obligation for the faithful to attend or not. The ODWS will be communicating other guidance and strategies in the coming weeks to assist you in preparing for these important liturgical celebrations.
Please join us for Back to Mission part 3, on Tues, Oct 6, 1:30p-3p, which will focus on Christmas liturgies and other topics related to worship and sacraments.

FROM THE OFFICE DIRECTOR

While fall is not my favorite season of the year weather-wise, I love this time of the liturgical year. The Gospel readings are full of parables by which Jesus teaches us about the Kingdom of God.  For those of us whose ministry – in various capacities – is liturgical or sacramental, we too have a role in proclaiming the reign of God.

Through sacramental signs, the liturgy provides us a glimpse of the heavenly banquet, where – as Isaiah reminds us – tears will be wiped away and death will be no more.  May we never forget the power that the Church’s liturgy has in our lives.

Below you’ll find plenty of
praenotanda: notes to help you have a successful month of ministry.  I hope you can join us for Back to Mission, a new series of roundtable conversations bringing parish leaders together; our session on Oct. 6 will focus on “A Pandemic Christmas” and the strategies for your faith community to celebrate the birth of Jesus safely, joyfully, and reverently.

It’s not too late for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion – new and veteran – to benefit from our virtual trainings this fall in English and Spanish.

Also, I hope that our iVoteCatholic and Pray a Minute initiatives have been a blessing to your faith community; please continue to share them with others.

As always, if there’s anything that Matt, Monica, or myself can do to assist you in your worship and sacramental ministries, please let us know.

FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

To commemorate our archdiocesan bicentennial, we have commissioned a new hymn text, Christ Our Light, inspired by Archbishop Schnurr’s pastoral letter Radiate Christ. This hymn text by Sr. Genevieve Glen, OSB may be used by parishes during the coming year and in perpetuity.  It can easily be sung to several different common hymn

tunes familiar to most any parish community. Click here to see the text and resources for its use.

The hymn will debut on November 7th at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter-in-Chains, as we celebrate its 175th anniversary.  I hope it will be used in our parishes throughout the coming bicentennial year, and into the future.  With its imagery of light and darkness, and a focus on Christ, the Incarnate Word of God, this hymn text could be used as soon as this Advent or during the Christmas Season.

Stay tuned for more resources related to this new bicentennial hymn to help you use it in your parish.

Soli Deo Gloria,

Matthew Geerlings

    Baptismal Record Addendum

The baptismal record is the primary record of a person's status in the Church. Confusion can be created with similar male and female first names.

The Chancellors of Ohio have created a format for recording the sex of the individual in the Sacramental Register Book and in issuing a Sacramental certificate.

The designation, (m) or (f), in parentheses can be placed on the same line as the name of the individual baptized. Please begin using this format immediately in recording and issuing baptismal certificates.  Please contact the Chancery Office at 513.263.3342 if you have questions.
New Apostolic Letter from Pope Francis on the Word of God

Yesterday (Sept 30), to mark the 1,600 anniversary of the death of St. Jerome, Pope Francis released a new Apostolic Letter Scripturae Sacrae Affectus (Devotion to the Word of God). This brief, yet beautiful reflection from the Holy Father invites everyone, especially young people, to renew their devotion to Sacred Scripture, and to offer a “radiant and attractive witness” of mercy and communion.

    Annual Publication Online Orders

Online orders are now being taken for liturgical publications, like Workbooks for Lectors, Sourcebooks for Sundays and Holidays, Calendars, etc.
    Photos Needed: Parishes at Prayer

We’d like to feature a photo of one of our parishes at prayer at the top of each new monthly news email.  If you can share a photo of your faith community celebrating the liturgy, please email the ODWS with a photo attached.  Some basic guidelines:
    • Landscape, not portrait
    • Hi-res (at least 2MB)
    • Focus more on the people than the building

    Q.    What is intinction? Can it be practiced in my parish?

    A.    Intinction is the practice of dipping the consecrated Host into the Precious Blood for ministry of Holy Communion under both kinds to the faithful. This is much more common in the Eastern rites, and while permitted by the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, it is not a normative practice. There are logistical as well as pastoral issues, and the sign value of drinking from the chalice is important. While it’s a legitimate way for concelebrating priests to receive Communion under both species even during a pandemic (which they are legally bound to do), it is not the preferred form for ministry to the faithful in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati or in the U.S. writ large.
