FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear friends and colleagues,

“We should glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whom is our salvation, life and resurrection, through whom we are saved and delivered.”

In this entrance antiphon for the Mass of Lord’s Supper, we find not only an introduction to Holy Thursday but truly a statement of purpose for the entire Paschal Triduum. May your liturgical and sacramental ministry during these most holy days bring glory to God!

In this month’s Praenotanda, you’ll find resources to continue preparing for the Paschal Triduum and Eastertide in your Family of Parishes, including resources to prepare to sing the Exsultet, rubrics for multiple paschal candles at one Easter Vigil, and more. Let us know if you need any more support to prepare these important holy days.

Please remember that use of the new Order of Penance is obligatory by the Octave Day of Easter, April 16.

As always, if there’s anything that Matt, Monica, or I can do to assist you in your worship and sacramental ministries, please let us know.

ODWS Director

FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

For the past few Mondays I’ve had the privilege of meeting many of you at our Music Mondays at the various deaneries. The discussions have been informative and lively, and I appreciate those of you who took the time to come to these events. There are many great stories of successes and
collaboration, but there is also some trepidation as we continue to move through the Beacons of Light process.

Please remember that information about Beacons of Light for parish leaders can be found on the Pastoral Planning Pathway website. And as always I am available to answer questions or concerns you might have.

As you journey through Holy Week, please remember to take a few minutes for yourself. Self-care is important in this stressful week for us all, so allow yourself a few minutes every day to take care of you!

A reminder that after a few years of Covid-induced hiatus, the Annual NPM Cincinnati Choral Festival returns on Sunday, April 23rd at 7:00 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Harrison. Choirs are invited to sing 2-3 choral pieces from their own repertoire and then join in the large choir singing of Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus and Courtney’s One Faith, One Hope, One Lord. For those people in the northern section of the Archdiocese, this event will be held on Wednesday, April 26th at 7:00 p.m. at Incarnation Parish in Centerville. More information can be found at www.npmcincinnati.org.

Soli Deo Gloria,

Good Friday Solemn Intercession for Ukraine

Rubric number 13 of Good Friday in the Roman Missal indicates that “In a situation of grave public need, the Diocesan Bishop may permit or order the addition of a special intention.” As in 2022, Archbishop Schnurr permits the addition of such an intercession for the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday in 2023.  You’ll find text in English and Spanish, with and without chant notation on the ODWS website.

Triduum in a Family of Parishes

You’ll find guidance on how to celebrate your first Paschal Triduum in a Family of Parishes with multiple churches on the ODWS website.  Details are available on multiple paschal candles, scheduling, sacramental record-keeping, stripped altars in empty churches, empty fonts, and more.  You might also want to check out the special intercession for Good Friday and some tips on singing the Exsultet. Please send us any unanswered questions so we can continue to update this guidance each year.
SACRED OILS: Guidelines for Custody and Care, and Reception in the Parish

As we approach the Chrism Mass and the Paschal Triduum, please be attentive to our guidelines on the proper Custody and Care of Sacred Oils, found on the ODWS website. Also, you will find The Order for the Reception of Holy Oils on the ODWS website, to be used at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper or another suitable time.
National Eucharistic Revival: Point Persons

To help make the parish phase (summer 2023-2024) of the National Eucharistic Revival a success, the national leadership team is hoping to solicit a point person from each parish (or, in our case, each Family of Parishes) to receive communications and help promote the revival locally. Each pastor should designate someone to serve in this role by completing this form.  Prime candidates for this role are the Director of Evangelization, the Director of Worship, or some other key leader in the Family of Parishes.

Beacons Roundtable is April 25
1:30-3:00pm

Please join us for our next Beacons Roundtable, Tues, April 25, 1:30-3:00pm focused on the role of pastoral councils in planning and synodality.

Recording, slides, and links for this week's session and all previous sessions are found on the Beacons Roundtable  site.
Christmas Mass Schedules

As a reminder, Christmas Day falls on a Monday this year. The following guidance is offered for establishing Mass schedules to cover both the Fourth Sunday of Advent and the Solemnity of Christmas. Given the extraordinary arrangement of liturgies for these days, the normal parameter (from Beacons of Light) for a priest to celebrate only two Masses on Sunday does not apply. Schedules may be so arranged that a priest may celebrate three Masses each day (per the norm of canon 905 §2), if necessary, from Saturday (December 23) through Monday (December 25).
Masses are celebrated for the Fourth Sunday of Advent from 3:00 PM on Saturday, December 23, through early afternoon of Sunday, December 24. Beginning at 3:00 PM on Sunday, December 24, and extending throughout the day of December 25, the Masses of Christmas are celebrated. When the Christmas Mass at Night is scheduled to begin prior to midnight of December 25, then that Mass should be counted as one of a priest’s Masses celebrated on Sunday, Dec. 24.
In late summer/early fall, look for more information and resources to help get word out to parishioners regarding the obligation to attend Mass for both the Fourth Sunday of Advent and the Solemnity of Christmas.
Adults with Special Needs Retreat

On April 22nd at St. Albert the Great in Kettering, the Office for Persons with Disabilities will be hosting an adult with special needs retreat from 9:00am-1:00pm and Family Mass at 12:00pm with Fr. Kyle Schnippel. The cost is $25.00 and families can register through Adults with Special Needs Retreat - Archdiocese of Cincinnati (catholicaoc.org)
NET Ministries (National Evangelization Team) will be planning and implementing this adaptive retreat for our adults.  We are so excited to offer this amazing opportunity in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.
If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Averion laverion@catholicaoc.org for more information.
Q.   Why does the ending of each Collect (Opening Prayer at Mass) no longer include the word “one” before the word “God”?

A.    The translation of each liturgical text around the world is based on a master text in Latin (a “typical edition”) which helps to unify the language used in liturgical prayer throughout the universal Church. In the Latin, the word “one” (unum) is not used in the formula that concludes each Collect, and thus shouldn’t be included in the translated texts, even though it had been since the texts were first translated after Vatican II. Since the third edition of the Roman Missal was re-translated in 2010, the question of adjusting this text has been considered by both the bishops of English-speaking nations and the Holy See. Finally, in the winter of 2021, the Holy See confirmed the change made by the U.S. bishops to bring the English text back to fidelity to the Latin.  You can find more details here.
