FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear friends and colleagues,

As summer wanes and the pace of parish and school life picks up, I am grateful for the many ways in which you provide liturgical and sacramental ministry to the faithful throughout the archdiocese, even in the midst of many challenges.

In the praenotanda below, you’ll find information about upcoming formation and training programs hosted by the ODWS both for parish leaders and for the faithful at large, liturgical calendar notes, and many more resources to inform your ministry.

As always, if there’s anything that Matt, Monica, or I can do to assist you in your worship and sacramental ministries, please let us know.

Jeremy Helmes
ODWS Director

FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

This week I’m fortunate to meet so many of you at our annual Pastoral Musician’s Evening of Renewal. A special congratulations to those music ministry personnel who are celebrating anniversary milestones in their work.

As our choral seasons are about to begin anew following our summer breaks, please be mindful to stay on top of the latest news regarding the pandemic to ensure safe singing and music making practices in our parishes. Give the musicians in your parish programs “permission” to call in sick and not feel guilty about doing so.

Finally, I know you will keep hearing information regarding the Beacons of Light initiative and our Families of Parishes. See more information below and make sure you're signed up for Beacons Update to stay fully informed.

Soli Deo Gloria

Sept. 11 (20th Anniversary)

Since the 20th anniversary of Sept 11, 2001 falls on a weekend this year, Archbishop Schnurr has given permission for the Masses for Various Needs and Occasions “For the Nation” or “For the Preservation of Peace & Justice” to be used on Sunday, Sept 12 (cf. GIRM 374) for pastoral advantage. Find out more on the ODWS website.

Day of Prayer for the Church and Victims of Abuse

The archdiocese will observe the fourth annual Day of Prayer for the Church and Victims of Abuse on Tuesday, Sept 14. In addition to Mass for the Feast of Exaltation of the Holy Cross celebrated by Archbishop Schnurr at 5:15pm at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter-in-Chains, all are encouraged to observe this day in parishes, schools, and other institutions.
Sample texts for Mass and other liturgical and devotional resources are on the ODWS website.

Beacons of Light

It may seem that every time you read an email from a Pastoral Center office or communication from your parish Beacons of Light is featured. Or, you may wish you knew more about this process of planning for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. No matter how informed you are about Beacons of Light, now is the time to sign up for regular Beacons communications if you have not already done so. Click here to view the latest video on Archbishop Schnurr explaining why Beacons of Light is important.
ASL Mass and Reconciliation for the Deaf Community

Fr. Michael Depcik, OSFS, is among fewer than a handful of culturally Deaf priests worldwide. We are fortunate to welcome Fr. MD (an alum of our own St. Rita School for the Deaf) to the Archdiocese of Cincinnati in September as he offers Mass and Reconciliation in ASL for the Deaf community.   While these liturgies are being offered predominately for the Deaf Community, hearing people are also welcome to attend the Mass.  There will be an interpreter available for the hearing at these liturgies.  All are welcome!  Contact the OPD for more information.
Christmas 2021 Scheduling and Obligation

Since December 25 (The Solemnity of the Nativity) falls on a Saturday in 2021, the question of satisfying one’s obligation to attend Mass for both Christmas and Holy Family arises. Also, the question of scheduling parish Masses for consecutive days of precept can be complicated. Find out more information about this, and scheduling of liturgies for Mary, Mother of God (also a Saturday)/Epiphany on our website.
Calendar Advisories:
Dec. 12 & Jan. 1

The Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, January 1, 2022 falls on a Saturday.  As such, the obligation to attend Mass is abrogated in the USA. For more on this and how to fulfill the consecutive obligations for Dec 25/26, click here.

A wedding liturgy on Sat, Jan 1, 2022 has specific parameters. Learn more here about what readings and prayers must be used.
Q.    Is the New American Bible the only translation of Scriptures we can read from at Mass?

A.    Since May 19, 2002, the revised Lectionary, based on the New American Bible is the only English-language Lectionary that may be used at Mass in the dioceses of the United States, except for the current Lectionary for Masses with Children which remains in use. The 1970 edition of the New American Bible is used in the Scripture readings and canticles of the Liturgy of the Hours (except the Benedictus, Magnificat, and Nunc dimittis.)
