FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear friends and colleagues,

As we stand on the threshold of Lent, let me thank you – on behalf of Archbishop Schnurr and on behalf of all the faithful to whom you minister – for your tireless efforts in liturgical and sacramental ministry to God’s people, especially during this most sacred time of the year, the Paschal Cycle.

In this month’s Praenotanda, you’ll find many resources to continue preparing for the Paschal Triduum and Eastertide in your Family of Parishes, resources to prepare to sing the Exsultet, rubrics for multiple paschal candles at one Easter Vigil and other considerations for celebrating the Triduum as a Family of Parishes, and more. Let us know if you need any more support to prepare these important liturgical seasons.

Of note, I hope to see anyone connected to the Christian initiation of adults – pastors, vicars, deacons, OCIA team members, directors of worship and evangelization, parish musicians, and more – at our Initiate Workshop on March 25 (Cincinnati) or March 26 (Dayton) with Fr. Paul Turner. Register by March 10!

As always, if there’s anything that Matthew, Gloria Ann, or I can do to assist you in your worship and sacramental ministries, please let us know.

FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

With great joy we welcome our new Archbishop, Robert Casey. The motto on his coat of arms reads, “Into your hands.” We know this as the text of the refrain for the psalm prescribed for Good Friday, Psalm 31. It is a lament, with a strong emphasis on trust. And we should trust in the Holy Spirit for sending us our new shepherd. We also offer our gratitude to our retiring shepherd, Archbishop Dennis Schnurr, and wish him well in his retirement.

Have you read the latest Parish Vitality Report? There you will find a plethora of information about how the Beacons of Light process is unfolding and where we are headed. It is important as musicians to understand the importance of worship in our Families of Parishes and the impact our ministry has on bringing the Eucharist principle to life.

The busiest time of our liturgical calendar lies before all of us. While we work to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ to our neighbors, please do not neglect to tend to your own spiritual health and well-being.

Soli Deo Gloria,

Matthew J. Geerlings
Music Director

Liturgical Preparation for the Paschal Cycle
You’ll find a multitude of resources to assist in preparing the liturgies of Lent, Triduum, and Easter including the annual preparation resource from the FDLC, a ritual text for Ash Wednesday liturgies outside of Mass, a sample Lenten communal penance service, music suggestions, preparation checklists for Holy Week liturgies, updated rubrics for the Mandatum and text for the presentation of the sacred oils, and guidance on celebrating Holy Week in a Family of Parishes.
Liturgical Considerations in the time between the Appointment and Installation of Archbishop Casey

In this time between the acceptance of the resignation of Archbishop Schnurr and the installation of Archbishop-designate Casey, the See of Cincinnati is considered vacant, even though Archbishop Schnurr has been appointed as Apostolic Administrator. Please note the following liturgical guidance regarding the Eucharistic Prayer, Universal Prayer intentions, and Mass formularies.

Start Time for the Easter Vigil

The Roman Missal specifies that the Easter Vigil "must take place during the night, so that it begins after nightfall…". In the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, the Easter Vigil for 2025 should begin NO EARLIER THAN 8:45pm, and preferably at 9:00pm.

Q. Are the scrutinies only for the catechumens or also for those baptized Christians preparing to be received into full communion?

A. The three scrutinies found in the OCIA are intended only for the unbaptized catechumens (now called “elect”), to be celebrated on the Third, Fourth, and Fifth Sundays respectively. They are NOT intended for those already baptized who are seeking to be received into the full communion of the Catholic Church or those adults preparing for Confirmation and/or First Communion. The texts, imagery, and ritual actions themselves are intended for use only with the unbaptized, and are not appropriate for use with ones already baptized. There is an optional penitential rite to be used with baptized candidates which can be used on the Second Sunday of Lent. Using the proper rite with the proper people will help make clear the distinction between these two groups of people and properly respect the dignity of baptism.
