FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear friends and colleagues,

I hope that the summer has afforded you some time away, at least from some of the busy day-to-day of liturgical and sacramental ministry: sacramental prep, choirs, big liturgies, liturgical seasons, and on and on!

In this month’s Praenotanda, you’ll find some info about staying connected to the National Eucharistic Revival, some thoughts on weddings in a Family of Parishes, info on ordering annual liturgical resources, and other timely topics.

Of note, I hope you can participate in the upcoming national meeting of the FDLC, focused on liturgies with and for children.  Catechetical leaders, school principals, DREs, and religion teachers will find the Weds Study Day most helpful, but I hope that everyone involved in liturgical ministry – pastors, vicars, deacons, directors of worship, music ministers, pastoral associates, worship commission members – will consider registering for the entire meeting, to be held here in Cincinnati October 10-12.  As a Church, we need to continue ensuring excellent liturgical celebrations for and with children, so I look forward to seeing you at this important national meeting.

As always, if there’s anything that Matt, Monica, or I can do to assist you in your worship and sacramental ministries, please let us know.

FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR

One of the issues I get asked about most often is not so much a musical question, it’s more of a human resources issue. This issue centers on hiring of additional musicians and whether they must go through the SafeParish background checks. While this issue was addressed with our archdiocesan human resources department some time ago, the information doesn’t always trickle down to those of
us who might need it.

Simply put, if you hire any musician for more than four events (Masses or other liturgies, concerts, weddings, funerals, etc.) per year, then they must be put on payroll and go through the AoC SafeParish training and background check – no exceptions. This helps prevent musicians who are terminated for violations of SafeParish protocols, or who might not otherwise pass the background check, from continuing their deplorable behavior in our music programs.

Another question almost as frequently asked is the use of music by David Haas. Most of you are aware of the very serious allegations levied against him by many, many women. The Archdiocese of Cincinnati has not promulgated an outright ban of his music, but in light of the nature of the allegations, use of his compositions should be weighed against the pastoral judgement we exhibit when selecting music. Some parishes have simply made the decision to quit using his music. And given the plethora of liturgical music available to us today, finding a suitable replacement is very simple to accomplish. We must constantly remain vigilant to help push back against predatory behavior. I know you will continue to do your part to help guard our music programs and our parishes.

Soli Deo Gloria,

Matthew J. Geerlings
Music Director

National Eucharistic Revival: Point Persons

To help make the parish phase (summer 2023-2024) of the National Eucharistic Revival a success, the national leadership team is hoping to solicit a point person from each parish (or, in our case, each Family of Parishes) to receive communications and help promote the revival locally. Each pastor should designate someone to serve in this role by completing this form.  Prime candidates for this role are the Director of Evangelization, the Director of Worship, or some other key leader in the Family of Parishes.
OCTOBER 10-12, 2023
HILTON NETHERLAND HOTEL
CINCINNATI, OHIO

Join the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions (FDLC) for its annual national meeting October 10-12, 2023 in beautiful downtown Cincinnati at the historic art deco Hilton Netherland Hotel.

This three-day meeting brings together diocesan and national leaders in worship, the members of the US Bishops' Committee on Divine Worship, and catechetical leaders to focus on the importance of good liturgical celebrations with children.

Shop ODWS Publications

2024 Annual Publications Available to Order on August 1st!

It's almost that time when parishes order their supply of annual publications for the next liturgical year, such as the Workbook for Lectors, At Home With the Word, Sundays & Seasons, Year of Grace Calendars, and more.

You can always visit our Shop
for archdiocesan resources to assist bereaved families, engaged couples, and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.

Remember that parishes, schools, and other non-profits can shop tax free by sending us your sales tax exemption number in advance!
Wedding Fees

One area of concern that has been raised recently is the variation in the amount of fees charged by different parishes within a Family for wedding liturgies. While there is no archdiocesan standard for the fees charged to a couple being married in a church, it would be an opportune time for each Family of Parishes to consider the fees being charged by each parish and make adjustments appropriately.

Photos Needed:
Parishes at Prayer

We’d like to feature a photo of one of our parishes at prayer at the top of each new monthly news email. If you can share a photo of your faith community celebrating the liturgy, please email the ODWS with a photo attached. Some basic guidelines:
• Landscape, not portrait
• Hi-res (at least 2MB)
• Focus more on the people than the building
Coffee & Conversation
St. Ignatius Church
July 15, 9-11:30AM

In June, the OPD hosted Coffee & Conversation with Catholic Community members in the central (Our Lady of Sorrows, Monroe) and northern (Sacred Heart, Anna) locations in the archdiocese.  Those in attendance were members of our Deaf Community, special needs parents, educators, professionals, and advocates.  Our next meeting will be held at St. Ignatius Church, 5222 North Bend Rd., Cincinnati on July 15, 2023 from 9:00-11:30.  Everyone is welcome to attend as we work to create belonging for all in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

Q.   What is the difference between a “vigil” Mass and an “anticipated” Mass?  Which is the best word to describe a typical Saturday evening Mass in a parish church?

A.    While we tend to use the word “vigil” to describe a Mass on Saturday evening that fulfills the Sunday obligation, this Mass is (more often than not) merely an “anticipated” rather than truly a vigil Mass.

It is traditionally part of observing the liturgical calendar to begin a feast day the evening before (based on the similar Jewish tradition of marking a day from sundown to sundown rather than Midnight to Midnight.)

Some solemnities and feasts are so important and significant that they have multiple Mass formularies for their celebration, often including a Mass on the day itself and a Mass to be celebrated the evening before as a “vigil”.  Some of these are familiar to us (e.g. Easter, Christmas), and some are not as well known (e.g. Pentecost, Ascension, Epiphany, even the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul.)

Most Sundays (unless they are solemnities or feasts like those listed above) do not have a “vigil” Mass.  We simply “anticipate” their celebration with Mass on Saturday evening after the hour of precept.  If one is unable to participate in Mass on Sunday, they can attend Mass Saturday evening to fulfill their obligation, and the orations and readings for that Mass are the same as those used on Sunday.

The average Saturday evening Mass is “anticipated” rather than a “vigil” Mass.
